We're All Where We Want to Be

Whether we are successful or struggling, in any facet of business or life, we are each where we want—or have chosen—to be. When I say to a group, “We’re all where we want to be,” I usually get push-back. “I don’t want my business to be unprofitable,” one person will say (or, at least, think). “I’m tired of being overweight. I don’t want to be fat,” retorts another.

When I suggest we’re all where we want to be, I’m not talking about “wanting” in the flimsy form that term is usually used. I’m talking about real-life manifestation of our innermost desires and experiences forming our core beliefs, which mold our thoughts that turn into emotions. Those emotions then dictate our actions which, in turn, deliver the outcomes we experience.

At pivotal points, we make decisions—conscientiously or automatically. Those decisions are true, core desires. If one’s desire is for health more than the pleasure of excessive eating, a different outcome will occur from that of unbridled indulgence in gorging on one’s favorite foods. The same is true in business. We create our outcomes—whether by design or lack thereof.

External Forces

Sure, there are external elements that are out of our control. When I make my bold statement about being where we want to be, I’m not talking about events like an economic downturn that affects everyone. We can’t individually control that. But I am talking about how we react to that downturn, as well as how we have prepared for it. The business owner who is making payments on his expensive dream car that he has to give up because of the effect of a recession is where he wants to be in that his desires have been more for a toy he craves than for his company’s stability. If the financial fitness of his company (and his team’s well-being) were his deepest desires, the money that has been making the payments on his car could have been shoring up his business for unforeseen storms.

The elements of this scenario can be applied in any situation, business or personal. I trust you get the idea, so I won’t illustrate this point further right now.

What If We Don’t Like Where We Are?

There is a difference between being where we want to be and liking where we are. We’re all where we want to be because of decisions we’ve made along our path. Period. The good news is, if we don’t like our resulting reality, we have the power to change it.
